During WWII the term "Codetalker" was coined to describe the Native Americans who served in the United States Marine Corps, whose primary jobs was to translate and encode transmisions of tactical messages. The codetalkers used radio and military telephone communications using codes developed upon their native languages.

Their service to was extremely valuable due to the security of vital operations and the unbreakable nature of their language, which was unlike any other spoken language, and couldn't be translated even by Native Americans of other tribes.

The Navajo are regarded as being the primary speakers of the code, but it was actually pioneered by the Choctaw Indians during the first world war- they were referred to as the Choctaw Code Talkers.

To provide even further security in the transmission of sensitive strategies there were several other Native American groups used, including the Basque, Lakota, Choctaw, Cherokee, Comanche, and Meskwaki soldiers.
